Diversity & Inclusion in the Avolio Lab

Our mission is to study ecology to build knowledge for future generations while creating a welcoming working and learning environment that is both inclusive and supportive. We are committed to upholding the Diversity and Inclusion principles outlined by the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences (EPS), including the call to dismantle anti-Black and other forms of racism within EPS found here.
Science is most innovative when conducted by diverse teams and communities. We believe the scientist profession should be attainable by all and this means building a team that reflects this, despite existing barriers including but not limited to differences in research culture, language, absence of role models, sexism, racism, heteronormativity, financial background, and physical/mental ability. We will continue to recruit, support, and collaborate with students and scientists from underrepresented groups, experiences, backgrounds, and identities. We value open-mindedness, mutual respect, mindful listening, and recognize that this work is ongoing.
Allyship is a practice, so we seek to regularly reaffirm our commitment through outreach, education, and discussion. Together, we participate in multiple activities outlined in our lab’s Plan-of-Action in addition to actions described by EPS. We also encourage prospective students, staff, and collaborators to check out our Lab Culture and Expectations. Lastly, field research safety is an often overlooked yet essential concern. Please see our Field Safety Policy.
